Jumeirah expands into Africa with private island and safari properties

Jumeirah has partnered with Thanda Group for two new properties in South Africa and Tanzania

Dubai’s Jumeirah is expanding into Africa for the first time, partnering with Thanda Group for two new luxury properties, Jumeirah Thanda Island and Jumeirah Thanda Safari.

Located in the protected Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve in Tanzania, Jumeirah Thanda Island is Jumeirah’s first private island property. The exclusive-use villa boasts five oceanfront suites surrounded by five hectares of powder sands and protected waters. The property celebrates Tanzania’s historical ties to Arabian hospitality, when seafarers on trade routes exchanged knowledge, skills and stories. Accessed via a short flight from Dar es Salaam, the island will offer its guests barefoot luxury, personal chefs and daily guided boat tours.

Jumeirah Thanda Safari is another first for the group. Located in one of South Africa’s top private safari destinations, KwaZulu Nata, the property features branded residences, an exclusive member’s club and 14,000 hectares of private reserve that was once the hunting ground of Zulu kings. It will be the first safari experience for Jumeirah, and guests will have private access to 386 hectares of access-controlled wilderness, home to the Big Five, as well as a dedicated concierge service.

Thomas Meier, chief operating officer and interim chief executive officer at Jumeirah, said the properties offer guests new experiences rooted in culture and connection. “Not only do these exceptional properties mark our first entry into Africa – a market which continues to show strong growth in the luxury travel sector – but they represent a new style of experience for Jumeirah with everything from total exclusivity to the opportunity to experience the wonder of nature at its finest,” he said.
