Dubai, UAE, XX November 2023: Jumeirah Group, the luxury hospitality company and member of Dubai Holding, has unveiled its sustainability ambitions for 2030, providing a transparent roadmap for the brand’s continued commitment to driving positive climate action for the UAE and beyond.
Building on Jumeirah’s existing initiatives, including key projects focused on areas such as waste diversion and marine conservation, the roadmap represents a formal strategy for the group, aligned with the vision of its parent company, Dubai Holding in the UAE’s Year of Sustainability. A Principal Pathway Partner of COP28, Dubai Holding is a key signatory of the Climate-Responsible Companies Pledge initiated by the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), which sees its signatories commit to the UAE Net-Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.
Under the outlined targets, Jumeirah Group will focus on several key areas of sustainable development. Highlight targets for 2030 include:
Additionally, Jumeirah is partnering with global and local organisations to find tangible, scalable and practical sustainable solutions for the hospitality industry. This includes the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI) and the recently announced UAE National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, Ne’ma.
Jumeirah has also pledged to address the root causes of plastic pollution and eliminate single use plastics from its ecosystem as part of its commitment towards The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative. To date, Jumeirah onsite filtration and bottling systems will help remove over nine million plastic water bottles from its beachfront and is has replaced 415km of plastic wraps and bagging, and over 864,000 of plastic food prep and container items, including straws, cups, lids, gloves and aprons across its food and beverage operations.
Through these initiatives and others, Jumeirah Group continues to drive sustainable luxury hospitality in a direction that resonates with the demands of guests for eco-friendly and socially responsible travel options and support the future sustainability of the industry.
Commenting on the group’s sustainability ambitions, Katerina Giannouka, Chief Executive Office at Jumeirah Group, said: “As a Dubai headquartered hospitality brand, we share the UAE’s vision to achieve sustainable economic development whilst preserving the environment. In the UAE’s Year of Sustainability, and as we look ahead to COP28 and its ambition to unite the world in climate action, we are committed to shaping a responsible hospitality sector for the future. In sharing these targets, our aim is to provide transparency around our performance and future plans, and to hold ourselves accountable for delivering a significant, meaningful contribution towards climate action in every market where we operate.”
With Dubai set to put climate action on the world stage with the hosting of COP28 UAE over the coming weeks, Jumeirah Group will also showcase a visual reminder to the world to support climate action through a special projection onto the sail of Burj Al Arab Jumeirah. A globally recognised landmark of Dubai, and one of the most instagrammed hotels in the world, will use its influence to promote the importance of COP28 globally and the collective responsibility of all nations to protect the natural world and the communities that live among it.
